How do I park a car in a parking lot?

Is it illegal to park a car in a parking lot right where the paved path ends?

  • There is a gravel parking lot by my child's school, and I usually park my car right where the paved path ends. I DO NOT park on the path, but rather on the gravel. Recently I was told by some "important" person that I cannot park on the sidewalk. However, the definition of sidewalk says that it is A paved walkway along the side of a street. Since the parking lot is not a street, and the paved path does not run ALONG the parking lot but rather runs into it, does it make sense to say that the person telling me not to BLOCK the SIDEWALK is wrong?

  • Answer:

Just keep parking there. They just want the parking space for them self.

The school decides where you can park. End of story. Some 'definition' you pulled from a book means nothing.

The Great Quizoo

The owner of the parking lot decides where you're allowed to park. If the owner or someone acting on their behalf wants you to move your car from that spot, regardless of whether it's technically a "sidewalk" or not, then you have the choice of complying, or risking having your car towed.

That's honestly the dumbest argument I've heard on any subject in a long time. If I was a school administrator and you came to me with that, I would call protective services to have your child removed from your home because you're clearly mentally unfit to be a parent.

Parking laws are local, not universal. If you want to know, start by reading the local parking laws in your city or county ordinances. Then find out who owns the gravel area. If you own it, you can do what you want. If you do not own it, then your use requires permission of the owner and that permission can be limited.

If someone from the school came to you and said you are not allowed to park there, then you can't park there. Its not that hard of a concept. It makes sense to keep the end of the path clear so kids can walk freely into the lot.

So you are blocking the end of the paved path to the parking area. It's THEIR parking lot. Move your car, moron.
