Should i let my lifetime indoor cats go outside? SERIOUS PROBLEM!?
-
ok so i have 4 cats that have been strictly indoor cats their entire lives. A brother and a sister both 17 years of age. And two twin brothers that are severely deformed (due to some idiot letting brother and sister mate.) My fear is that they have been indoor all of their lives and have never seen a road, a car, dogs, other feril cats, hawks, coyotes...etc. My aunt says that she is going to force them to be indoor/outdoor cats by the end of this month. Mind you, the 17 year olds are almost blind...have arthritis. The twins have deformed in-turned feet. Would it be more humane for me to just have them put down??

Answer:
WTH is wrong with your aunt and why would she think this was a good idea? Absolutely not you should not let them outside , not unless you can build a VERY SECURE outdoor cat enclosure preferably with a top cover too, that they could access through a cat door IF THEY WISH and come back in WHEN THEY WISH. But just put them out ? No way. It would be far more humane to have them put down and be there with them and hold them than to put these poor old crippled blind cats outside with no protection from anything. Unless you could list them with a rescue and find someone willing to adopt elderly or crippled cats in time. Like someone else said i would put up a hell of a fight against this. Try to get some other family members on your side to convince her this would be cruel. If you think it could help, try to get a vet to talk to her or someone from SPCA or a Humane Society. I don't know how old you are or what your options are, but is there any way you and your cats can move somewhere else? Or what about just keeping them in your room and put a lock on the door ? If it did come down to it that i had to have my pets put down for this, I would never speak to the horrid woman again.

What is wrong with your aunt? They can't go outside now, way to dangerous. I don't know your situation but if you can't keep them, or you can't re home them then you will just have to put your aunt down in the most humane way possible. I meant your cats...not your aunt..although she WOULD be my first choice.

If they are old and deformed then why start now? They aren't used to the outdoors, they have no ' streetsmarts' and they will likely be unable to defend themselves. All those things you mentioned that they haven't seen are DANGERS to cats. They may even end up lost.

WHY is your aunt putting these cats outside? They are YOUR cats and will end up dying a very painful death outside. If you cannot convinence her to keep them in for the remainder of their days, then you choose what to do for them. Is there any one else that can convience her it would be very cruel to do this?

What the hell? Your aunt makes my blood boil. Put HER to sleep. damn. It would be more humane to put them down, but I'd put up a mother of a fight with your aunt.

After having kept the cats in for 17 years, why the sudden urge to let them out? It would definitely seem like murder to me to let out an almost blind, arthritic cat out in the open where it can get run over, mauled or worse... If you are tired of looking after them and want to be free of them, the best thing would be to put them down. At least their troubles will not be stretched and they will be out of it quickly. Leaving them out in the open would only prolong their agony because they will be hurt and in pain without knowing why they are subjected to this torture suddenly.

If they are in any pain or suffering, it may be best to put them down. Putting them outside with only put them in danger. They do not have any street smarts and will be easy targets for predators or may get hit by a car. It is not fair to them to just throw them outside after they have lived indoors their entire life till this point. They will be traumatized. Maybe you can find a foster home? Try anything you can prior to just throwing them outside. That is likely to end very tragically for them. Good luck! Wish you the best!

You should only let a cat roam outdoors if its been outside all its life... It needs to grow up learning the outdoors if not then it could get into a lot of trouble and i mean death... because it just doesn't have the mentality to know how everything works and what to do and where to go and how to react to things. so many ways for a cat to die or get hurt if just thrown into the world when its whole life it just lived indoors.

Forcing them outside at this point wouldn't be much better than a death sentence. They have no idea how to fend for themselves, and would be at a serious disadvantage because they are disabled.

It could be very dangerous 2 let them out now as they will not be street wise and not capable to defend theirself in fights with other cats....
