How many ozs. in a quart?

2.5 quart casserole dish vs. 3 quart casserole dish?

  • OK, I'm new to the kitchen and have just started cooking. I have a 2.5 quart casserole dish (vintage pyrex town and country) and in a lot of my recipes it calls for a 3 quart casserole dish. I know its only a difference of 2 cups but should i upgrade to a 3 quart? If i kept my 2.5 quart dish would i have to alter all my recipes? Thanks! all help is needed!

  • Answer:

A good share of your recipes will be fine in the smaller casserole dish. But obviously you'll have some that won't fit. And don't forget that some bubble up while in the oven. If you have quite a few recipes that call for a 3 quart dish, buy one and keep your 2.5 qt. also. You can even use those recipes and split them into 2 smaller casserole dishes and adjust the baking time. As far as altering "all" your recipes, you'll learn which ones have plenty of room so don't need any adjustment vs. the ones that need reduction. Until you learn how to tell the difference, I suggest you buy a 3 qt. dish or plan to clean your oven often from the overflows!
