The two are closely related in some areas such as physical chemistry but very different in other. Petroleum engineering is limited to one field and primarily to the portion of oil and gas production related to drilling and the recovery of petroleum from the underground reservoir. Chemical engineers are employed in a wide variety of field and industries and have a much greater choice of jobs, assignments and chances for variety in their work.
