-
ko, let me start off by saying that i have never used linux. i have used windows mt entire lie until my OS crashed and i couldn't afford windows and was told linux was free so i had a friend install it for me. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA HOW TO USE LINUX!!!!! every time i try and use it for more than facebook and youtube i feel as though i might as well be using a computer from the matrix movies! i have music on y smart phone, which i want to put on my ipod. i am aware crapple, yes i said crapple, isn't the best of friends with linux, nor anything else unrelated to mac. so there is no itunes for linux. but then, itunes wouldn't let me transfer songs not bought onto an ipod. ok anyway, i drag and dropped my music from the smart phone, then i tried drag and dropping it to my ipod shuffle(second generation, the little square one) and wouldn't ya know?! my shuffle flashed orange and green letting me no there is no music on it! can someone who knows how to use linux, im running linux mint 11, please guide me through this step by step so i can use my ipod? i just wanna hear music without taking up space on my phone, why is it so damn hard :( i have literally know idea how to use linux terminal or wine or any of that stuff so if you re willing to take on this request remember you re dealing with a linux virgin thank you and please get back to me asap! p.s. sorry for the typos im a fast typer (and my mouse barley works and my keyboard doesnt pick up on all my key strokes, i have to use wireless eybord with a built in trac ball because my laptop screen is cracked so i have to plug it into my tv with an hdmi cable, im not very lucky when it comes to technology and combatibility apperently) so its a real pain to go back over everything sorry!

Answer:
Apple sucks by making you use itunse to do anything. All other mp3 players you just drag and drop. When you turn the mp3 player on it builds the database, allowing you to listen to the songs. But noooooo, not with Apple. itunes builds the database, making you NEED itunes (i said it once and ill say it again Apple sucks). If you want to use your shuffle without itunes, you need to build the database. Someone wrote a program that will build the database, and no need for itunes. First open your package manager and search for "python". To install programs on Linux, you must give your password. This is the password you typed in when you installed that distro. What makes Linux more secure than windows is you do not log in an administrator (root in linux). You log in as a user. If you want to install something you MUST have that password. You can reset the password: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword The above method is logging in as root to change the password. Without that password you will be limited to what you can do. So it would be a very good idea to remember it or reset it. Anyway once you reset/remember it download a program called iPod shuffle database builder. http://sourceforge.net/projects/shuffle-db/ Just drag and drop your songs to the shuffle, drag and drop rebuild_db.py to the root directory (top most directory) and type in terminal (in that directory) sh rebuild_db.py. OR.... Get any of these mp3 players: http://build.rockbox.org/ And install Rockbox. Turning it from an mp3 player to a media player with games and some apps.

The older iPods are supported on Linux. Open the Package Manager, input gtkpod or GPixPod for iPod file managers (install them), and I personally like Clementine Music Player http://www.clementine-player.org/ which also syncs an iPods. To set up the Clementine repository for Mint: Open a terminal and input: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:me-davidsansome/clementine sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install clementine
1) You do need a password to modify your computer. Linux is obsessive about security and does not let anybody install anything. So you need to ensure that you know your password to install things. Ask you friend who installed your Linux on your system to give you administrative privileges to install software...seems like he forgot to do so. 2) Your iPod will be recognised automatically by Linux as a Flash drive if you have libimobiledevice installed. Get this from http://www.libimobiledevice.org/ or use your package manager (the software centre) This is the best way; 3) Use RhythmBox or Banshee as well and this gives you something like an iTunes facility to sync between your devices
