Joining the military?

I'm consitering joining the military, but dont know if it's right for me...?

  • The things that attract me to the military are the high level of training, the 100% effort and team mentality, and the opportunity to experience things most people will never get to experience. I also like that the military puts a huge emphasis on physical fitness and sports. I think it would be awesome to see how far I can go in soccer as I turned down a university scholership out of highschool because I wanted to travel first. I dont regret it at all as travelling has literally changed my life, but I have always wondered how far I could have gone and I am crazy passionate about the sport. I guess having said that, Im putting off joining for a while because I want to travel and do a lot of things first. I dont live a very typical life and I dont think I want to. I guess Im attracted to the military because it seems like a really intence unordinary thing to do, but a part of me fears that I will just end up spending my life living in my past adventures and wishing I could be out hitchhiking around australia, or cycling accross Africa or something, and if I dont join the military, the way my life is going, I think I could be very happy as an adventure guide and getting paid (barely enough to live on) to do these things. In the military, I wouldnt have to worry about money and my financial future would be more definate. I could save for my retirement and travel all over the world once I retire, but if I go into adventure guiding, I might not have enough money to do that. I guess one last thing that I am definately consitering is where I could live. There arent really any military bases anywhere I would be particularly keen to live or raise a family at etc and moving every few years probably wouldnt really allow me to grow into one place either. If I go into adventure guiding, there is a small town near where I grew up that has everything I could imagine wanting in a town. It's somewhere I would be proud to tell people I live and somewhere I wouldnt mind setting up some permanent roots, getting to know people in the community and building a home, growing my own food, raising kids, etc... blah sorry this is kinda rambling, but what is your advice?

There are many courses etc giving you the experience of military life. You go through training etc before you commit to serving for 4 years, so you'll have plenty of time to think of its right for you or not!

Well, the military can give you a lot of new experiences and give you the chance to do things you've never done. I'm in the Army, and I like what I do. After reading a little about your interests though, you sound like your a free spirit and love to go on adventures which is a great thing. When you join the military, especially when you first join, you don't have a lot of control over what you do, where you go, what you wear, when you can go out, etc.. and I'm not sure you would like that part. I have a fellow Army friend of mine that you remind me of. He was constantly doing adventurous stuff before he joined, and he joined the Army for the experience but he hates it because he doesn't have the control of his life that he wants. You'll get to travel in the military, and you can take advantage of those opportunities so I don't want it to sound like its horrible. I've spent the last year in South Korea which is somewhere I never would've gone if I wasn't in the Army. You can always try to go into the Guard or Reserves and get your feet wet in it. And I'm also not trying to discourage you from the military either. Like I said, I'm happy and don't plan on getting out any time soon. But its not for everyone.
