How do you format an sd card on the computer?

SD Card Corrupt will not format on Sony camera or Windows 7 computer HELP?

  • my daughter took many pictures on her recent trip with her sony digital camera on duracell 32gb sd card. she said she saw the pictures too on the camera. when she returned i tried to see the pictures on the camera and an error message came up saying 'cannot recognize memory card, must be formatted' and then it doesn't format the card when i say yes. i tried to format it on my computer but it doesn't do it...says cannot format card...the card is unlocked on the side and it is not clicked on read only...i tried to change the name of the drive from F to K and that didn't do anything.... tried using the free software to do a full scan on the card to see if there are any corrupted files or broken sectors or unrecoverable sectors but there are none of those....HELP!!!!

  • Answer:

If you formatted the card, it's very likely that you forever erased the photos. A few rules to follow when this happens. First, use software to recover any data if possible. If camera prompts you to format, always choose NO. NEVER format a camera memory card or erase photos on a PC or Mac, do that in your camera. deleting a single photo, in the camera is not the same as formatting. If you delete one photo, the camera doesn't actually erase the photo, it is tagged as being safe for overwrite and tagged so that the camera will not display the image. When you format, if successful, the camera will actually wipe the card clean, and there won't be anything to recover.

Other answers

1) Do NOT attempt to format the card 2) Use a different card until you can recover the corrupted card using a program like Rescue 4 If you attempt to format the card, you will permentantly destroy any image files on the card that might be recovered using an image recovery program NOTE: A 32 gb memory card is just too large. I makes people lazy and they do NOT not download all their image files to their computer at the end of the day. This just is asking for problems later.

If you can't recover the photos and still want to try formatting the card, try SD Formatter developed by the SD Association. The software formats all SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards and SDXC memory cards. It is said to provide quick and easy access to the full capabilities of your SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. The software is free.

Your computer's card reader may be the issue. First recommend purchasing an inexpensive USB SDHC card reader (check Amazon, less than $7). First try to open the card with this other card reader. If that doesn't work, try recovery software. Here are some very good freeware, recommend trying PhotoRec first: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/recovering-those-accidentally-lost.html If the computer still cannot recognize the card with the new card reader, try doing a "Quick Format" with your computer and card reader. Next try the recovery software again after the quick format. If you are successful recovering the photos, then finally conduct a format in the camera using the camera's format feature in its menus.
