What are my chances of getting into Stanford?
-
I am currently a sophomore. I hope to go to Stanford or UC Berkeley become an environmental engineer. GPA: 4.35 (weighted); 4.00 (unweighted) Class rank: 1/638 (this means top 10%- my school doesn't have individual rankings) Freshman: AP Statistics (score: 5) AP World History (score: 5) English I Acc. Biology Spanish I String Orchestra Cross Country Sophomore: AP Chemistry (did poorly on exam, hoping for a 3) AP European History (probably 4 or 5) Honors Pre-calculus English II Acc. Spanish II String Orchestra Cross Country Junior: IB English 3 HL IB History 3 HL IB Physics SL IB Music SL AP Calculus BC Spanish III Cross Country Senior: IB English 4 HL IB History 4 HL IB Physics HL IB Spanish SL AP Biology OR AP Environmental Science String Orchestra Cross Country online math course SAT Subject Tests: World History- 680 Extracurriculars: Cross country (4 years) Piano (11 years)- Advanced Level in Certificate of Merit plus numerous Festival awards Violin (9 years)- Honor Orchestra for 7 years, concertmaster of freshman orchestra Girl Scouts (10 years)- Secretary of my troop, top cookie seller, earned Bronze and Silver awards, working on Gold CSF (4 years) NHS (3 years)- Treasurer junior year Key Club (3 years) My biggest concern right now is my SAT score. I took a practice one and got a 1750, but I didn't finish half of the reading sections and am going to get a tutor this summer. I am a strong writer, and I am very passionate about music, running, and the environment. Does anyone have further advice to help me get into Stanford or Berkeley? And also would it be better for me to take AP Bio or environmental. I'm afraid environmental will look bad because it is an "easy" AP class, and I feel that regular biology as a freshman was not enough.

Answer:
OMGGG IB YEAHHH!! xD I think you have a good chance of getting into Stanford IF: --You continue to get A's and keep your rank up! You don't have to remain #1 (top 25 is great!) but if you can, then definitely do --You up your SAT... The tutor is a great idea! They help a lot :) I took a class at Sylvan and it increased my score by about 100 points. Shoot for a score above 2200, but if you can't get it there, don't stress... over 2000 is good enough, but it doesn't hurt to aim way high :) --Keep taking Subject Tests. If you can get all of your subject tests over 700, that is ideal if not necessary. When it comes to math and science, study really really hard for these Subject Tests because that's what they'll care about. Try really hard to get 750 and up on them if you can! --Keep going for leadership positions in clubs, and if you can't get them for whatever reason (although you seem like you're doing good with that!), then don't be afraid to start your own club! --Start your own personal hobby project or service project... one that really defines you, suits you, is unique to you, and has benefits. Colleges love to see you enjoy your passion in a way with tangible results. Maybe start some kind of marathony-type race thing (I know nothing about running hahahah... but you know... like one of those walks for cancer or something like that?) that benefits the environment. It will be a lot of work to run on your own, but people will be impressed if you prove you are organized and driven. Talk to any of your friends/teachers/neighbors who run and see if they would participate and then try to get it publicity in a local paper. You'd be surprised by how much you can achieve if you just try :) As for UC Berkeley... if you try to do all the things listed above and fall short on some (or even all), don't worry because you'll still be super qualified for Berkeley :) It's the fact that you went out and really tried that counts. It'll be tough, but all the IB crap and application torture is worth it in the end... trust me! Sacrifice a little free time to work your butt off because it will pay off, I promise :) Also: your extracurriculars ROCK! :)) You've worked really hard I see! Keep it up! edit: PS AP chem sucked like what dafuq was that, right?! It's going to be a big curve haha and I didn't study (IB chem wasn't until the day after, so after the AP test, I studied for IB chem XD hahah) so hopefully my failure and my classmates' failures will bring your score up :) when you become an IB senior, you stop studying for APs and SLs haha and you cram for HLs the morning of

I'm definitely not Stanford worthy so maybe I shouldn't be giving you advice but you look really good. A girl who graduated from my high school last year sounds like the same kind of person as you; she ran track and cross country, she took many AP/Honors/Upper classes, and she was interested in music. She also volunteered a lot. She was part of the seven percent of applicants or so that got into Stanford last year. So basically you have a very good chance.

Between Bio and Env, Bio is definitely the better. Now, in terms of getting into Stanford (or berk), there are a couple things that i need to say. First of all, you have stellar grades, but everyone applying to those schools has those. With your extra curriculars, those definitely help, but then again, everyone has them. What you need to do is find a way to make yourself stand out. You said that you are a strong writer. am passionate about music, running, and the environment. In my opinion, what you should do is pick one of those, and work on a project with it. With writing- you could try and write a novel, a series of short stories, a well researched paper, anything like that. Violen- Participate in YoungArts (will explain later) Running- Organize a race in your city for charity environment-i'm sure you get the idea. A lot of people who apply to these schools have stellar grades, loads of service hours, tons of extra-curriculars, and essays that are flawlessly written. However, not all of them have done something to show passion. You see, with all the things above, while they are awesome, they don't show what a student can do when they are told to do something amazing. With a biology class, i can ace every test, and finish with an A+, but all that means is that i picked up a textbook and studied. While that is good, it doesn't show what i can do when there is no limit. An A+ is the highest i can get in this class. You need to find a way to show Stanford how high you can reach. For example, say you decide to write a novel. You could write an okay novel, get it published,, and at the end of the day, be a mediocre author. Or, you could push the bar, and write a deep, thought provoking story, get it published, and be an amazing author. No one set the standard for you. There was no set list of assignments and tests that you had to ace in order to get a hundred. You had to figure it out yourself. The words from the novel would have come from within you. They would be original, not some regurgitated knowledge from a textbook. Show them that you can set the standard for yourself, and that you don't need someone else to do it. PS. If you decide to do something in Writing or Violin, there is an arts competition that i think you should check out. It's called YoungArts (not a typo). It is THE PREMIER arts competition for high school seniors. If you are a junior now, then you can apply. If you are a soph, you need to wait a year. This competition covers nearly every art discipline, from Music, to dance, to writing, and much, much more. Each discipline also has specific divisions within them. For example, in writing, there is a competition for novel writers, and another one for short story writers, and another for poets. Even if you were to not win the competition, even getting an honorable mention would greatly increase your chances of being accepted to Stanford. You should definitely check it out. www.YoungArts.org
