How much does a waitress make in tips?

How much would a waitress make in tips?

  • I was thinking about jobs i could have when I'm in college (I'm 14 right now) and I was thinking about becoming a waitress. I live in San Francisco and I want to work at a Cheese Cake Factory near my house. It's ALWAYS busy. During lunch, dinner, u name it. I was wondering how much a waitress could walk away with a night (in tips) if she worked for 8 hours a night for 5 nights a week? How many tables do you think she could serve each hour if she has a lot of experience?

  • Answer:

Something like that is really hard to calculate, simply because turnaround rate varies depending on how busy a restaurant is and how long people take to eat their meals. There's also the cost of each table's tab and the patrons' levels of generosity to factor in for the individual tips. San Fran has a minimum cash wage of 10.24/hr (according to http://www.paywizard.org/main/minimum-wage/tipped-workers). However I honestly don't know if or how that applies to wait staff at restaurants. If it applies, then 10.24 * 8 * 5 = $409.60 dollars per week is your pay, excluding taxes and tipping. average tipping is usually 10-15% for wait staff, more or less depending on how well you serve them and how generous the patrons are. So much of this is hypothetical that I can't give you a definitive range of numbers for how much you can expect to make.

I used to work at Red Lobster, not as busy as the Cheesecake Factory but still something to go off of, and typically for a lunch shift the servers made around $50 and for dinner around $100. That would be on a busy shift though. For sure expect to make at least $50 for an entire day. Some days you make really good tips, some days not so much. It all depends. You could probably serve around 2-3 tables each hour depending on how fast you are with each table. There was a server at Red Lobster that could get her tables turned around every 20 minutes... But keep in mind that customers don't like to be rushed and there will be a bigger tip in it for you if you provide them with great service and don't rush them. Hope this helps!

You have to work your butt off and flirt like crazy. I know it sounds sexist but My ex husband flirted with all the little old ladies when he wad a waiter at golden corral and xame home with no less than a hundred bucks a night. he got so much in tips he brought home a $0 paycheck.

Waitressing isnt a good idea for college students as the hours are most often between 11-10 Students tend to be studying/in class between 9-6. Which means you could only have 2-3 hours at work a day. Bar work would suit you much better as they are open until 2-3am.

It 100,000% depends on how good the waitress is. Great ones will make MUCH MUCH more than piss poor ones will make. Also, if you are in college you will NOT be working 8 hour nights 5 days a week. You would be working about HALF those hours and unless you have seniority you will not get the prime shifts. Edit: I know you are young and know NOTHING about working in the real world, but what I meant was that they will not GIVE YOU 40 hours a week because you have limited availability. Also, they do not like to give waitresses 40 hours because it takes away their flexibility AND you would be a full time employee....making you more expensive. Lastly...you would not even come CLOSE to being able to handle 40 hours a week working and college full time. High school is a complete joke compared to the workload you will have in college. High school effort and work load is the same as a part time job. Going to college is a full time job with overtime.
