How To Destroy Survey?

Survey: how quickly do YOUR female rats destroy an entire hammock?

  • Hi everyone! I'm getting several female rats soon. Understanding that they're the more "hyper" gender, they're big chewers. I'm currently making a stack of cheap hammocks atm. I know all females are different but quick survey: If you have female rats and you use hammocks...how many hammocks do you go through -- say -- a month? Also, do you have a lot of hard chewing toys in the cage?

  • Answer:

Oh good god. My female rat destroys a hammock in 2 days flat. She rips them up and puts the fabric on her house/hut. She usually only gets chew toys and what not

My female rats, that have sadly all passed away now, didn't destroy a single hammock. My male rats that I currently have though, have destroyed 2 hammocks (I didn't get them another) and have been doing all the can to eat they're igloo. They're completely ignoring all they're chew toys x_x The males that I have are far more hyper than the females I had, though this is extremely odd seeing as with all other rats I've met, the females have been more hyper than the males.

My rats kept their hammocks perfect for the first week, clean their cage and then they chew a hole and climb in between the fabrics, or chew the corners off so only 3 corners are attached, in the end i decided to buy a few sputniks and hard rope hammocks so i can just clean them rather than keep shedding out for hammocks all the time. i don't have many hard chewing toys either, one or two as rats keep their teeth short themselves by bruxing and rarely chew the chew toys. Some rats will chew them down and some won't but all 7 of mine have chewed them to shreds, you can get some really durable ones though which did last a few months.

Like 8-12 hammocks in a month

it depends on the hammock. their bog standard cheapy hammock has not so much a nibble. their first corner crush took about a week to kill. it's still usable, but has no lining. the second corner crush, with overstitching and denim lining took a lot longer to kill. on the other hand, my boys have never chewed, but over the space of about a week decided to kill their hammock.

i have a degu (which is much like rat really) . she can destroy a hammock in 2 days. i had to stop giving her them because she kept getting her feet caught in the shredded fibres and tying her self up by accident

Oh gosh! I'm so glad I don't have chewers! My boys have never chewed through a hammock. Little tatters around the edges, but nothing un-salvageable.
