How do I change my wireless password on Linksys router?

Messed up trying to reset router password.?

  • I was following this advice Type this into your web browser: http://192.168.1.1 It will bring you to the Linksys setup page. A window will pop up prompting you for a username and password to access the configuration page for your router. Enter "admin" (without quotes) for both the username and password. From there you can change your router name if you feel like it. click on the Wireless tab at the top of the settings screen. Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from the default value to something unique (you can use the same name you set as your Router Name in the previous step. Then Disable the Wireless SSID Broadcast option and click Save Settings.... Here is where it locked me out of my linksey. I can no longer connect to the internet unless I use a different wireless. When I try to go to http://192.168.1.1 it says Safari can't connect to this webpage. If there anything I can do?

  • Answer:

You were doing fine until you mentioned "Disable SSID Broadcast". As you now know your machine does not seem to work well with out the SSID being broadcasted. It is a good security feature but it seems to cause connection problems for many. Maybe 'Reset' your router to it's Default again or if you can hookup your PC/MAC to the Router with ethernet cable for setup of the Wireless signal. That should get your Safari browser onto the same network to Admin your Router. Follow your instructions but leave the SSID Broadcast Enabled and just set your Security to WPA2 with AES encryption type. Your machine may need a mix of AES and TKIP but test first with just AES. Basically you want the highest security your PC/MAC can run wirelessly. Also watch that your Router is broadcasting with the 802.11N or 802.11b/g/n signal that your machine can run. If it is older machine with new router then 802.11g/n mix should work for signal. # NOTE#-make sure you change the password on the router from the default "admin" and keep it safe.

Were you doing this while connected to the modem via wireless instead of wired? If so, you need to change the password in your PC wireless connection as it no longer matches the router

It sounds to me like you have lost your internet connection between your modem and the router. Can you access any other internet sites at all as is? If you have lost the internet connection, unplug your router entirely and reset your cable modem and reboot your PC. After both have come back up, reconnect the router, that should give you internet connection again. Then try the set-up site for the router once more. You should be able to get into the setup page.
