How to stop dog from killing black birds?
-
OK, we have a Shepherd Mix dog who likes to chase birds that have nested in our tree. Last year he killed several of the birds(Can't be sure how many). He killed the babies and killed one or both of the parents. And now some blackbirds have taken over the nest and we haven't seen chicks yet, and can't see into the nest. He goes to the toilet outside. We do take him for walks, it's that we have a collie who doesn't like him. And th collie will bark and bark. It doesn't matter how much you tell him to shut up. We have 3 dogs, 2 boys and a girl. They all get taken out. The collie more then the others. I take Xena out, and have been teaching her heel. She's around 9 months old. I would love to take her off the lead, but am scared. She's microchipped and has Zeus' name tag, with mobile number.

My shepherd does this too. I asked the vet. He said you can go to a trainer who can work with the dog or you can let it happen. Animals kill and eat other animals. nothing wrong with it. My cat brought half dead mouse into bed with us this morning!

Wow! Your dog must be so fast ... I own a terrier who takes great delight in 'seeing off' the birds but they always fly off in time!

First of all with the collie barking why don't you try a bark buster collar. This gives off a smell of citronella when the dog barks and they do not like it. So they get to associate barking with a smell they don't like but obviously no harm to them. With the shepherd mix I think it would be good to consult a dog behaviourist to correct him of this, it is not good to let this behaviour continue as it might turn into killing other things like cats or other small animals

Yes you can train this, but it will take a bit of work. You need to teach the dog to call off when the dog is acting with intention and focused on the task at hand. The video link shows a dog that didn't want to call off when going up to a fence with other dogs. After training the dog learned to call off. The training you use is called impulse control training. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9R59Ckz4p4

Perhaps putting a wire fence around the tree to keep the dog from getting so close to the tree?

Attach a small bell to his collar, this will pre warn birds
