What is the best walking tour of Philadelphia?

Philadelphia day tour from New York - Help please?

  • I would be staying 4 days in New York and I was thinking of doing a day tour to any nearby city but I was pleasantly surprised that Philadelphia is one hour and half only driving to there not 3 like D.C and I read a tour on Grayline.com tours , the tour include Depart New York through New Jersey , Pennsylvania and on to the city of brotherly love Philadelphia. Upon arrival we start with a panoramic tour that includes Chinatown, Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Elfreth Alley (The oldest inhabited street in America) and follow-up with a visit to the famous Liberty Bell, Constitution Square and Independence Hall, one of the many symbols of freedom in America . Departing Philadelphia we stop at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and then continue to Lancaster county home of the Amish people. After a break for lunch on own at the Amish marketplace we tour an Amish farmhouse and learn how they live without the benefit of modern technology, no electricity, running water, telephone service, or appliances. Late afternoon departure to NY Is that tour included top things in Phil. ? Thanks very much

  • Answer:

An 1.5 from NYC to Philadelphia, no way! Traffic up the wazoo. 2 hours if your lucky (and it takes 4-5 hours to get from NYC to Washington). That is a whole lot to do in one day, and if your doing lunch in Lancaster County, which is about a 1 to 1.5 hour drive from Philadelphia, that means that Philadelphia is all done in the morning. I doubt you'll get a chance to see much of anything that they are advertising. Sounds like there just going to drive by all those sites in Philadelphia and not actually let you get off the bus to go see them.

Well, that's a break-neck pace, and you're not going to really experience Philadelphia. It sounds like you "drive-by" Chinatown, BF Parkway and Elfreth's Alley [which ARE, after all, just streets]. You can't possibly "do" both Independence Hall AND the Art Museum in one morning, or even one day! If you want to get more of an experience of Philadelphia, take Amtrak to Philadelphia and spend the day doing whatever of those activities you want to do. Philly is easy to get around for all of the tourist areas. Surely, you're not thinking of DRIVING from/in NYC to/in Philly??? You'll spend all your time fighting traffic and trying to find places to park - and they'll cost an arm and a leg!!

I would have to agree with Momsez. I think you are driving past the points of interest on your way into the city. I don't think you will see much of the city if you are jamming Independence Hall and the Art Museum in the morning. Then a drive to Lancaster Co is at least an hour. Any time however, is good. As long as you don't set your hopes on seeing a lot of the City, you should be fine.

Realistically you can spend and entire day on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The old city area takes about 2 to 3 hours to see. there are several tour buses that run between the 2 areas the Philly Plash is the one with the most service.

Those are the highlights I guess?
