How do US servers effect UK websites and search engines?

• Hi there, I am stuck on deciding a website hosting server, if i choose a US server it is much cheaper than a UK server but i have been told the loading speeds are slower but by a small amount and also i was told that the support isnt as great. After thinking about it i figured that as i am a small business looking just for new customers in my local area (UK based) this wouldnt be too much of an issue. However someone also told me it will effect the search engine results and listing. Is this a true fact and if so in what ways will it effect it as i need as high listings as i can get. The other thing i wondered was if its the domain search engines look at could i get a US hosting package but with a .co.uk domain and it would remove any of the search engine complications?   Yes thats true if you are targetting UK market you will have to look to host on UK server , as google presently shows all local search results and if you host your site on US server , that will surely hamper your ranking on UK Search engine (google.co.uk) this will be 100 % your loss.
