What are the major subjects in accountancy?

What gcse subjects do you need to become an accountant?

  • Hey, I'm in year 10 and I have already chose my subjects for gcse. I chose history, german and DT. I found out that im really into maths and want to become and accountant, but I think I chose the wrong subjects. Will I still have an accountancy future?

  • Answer:

GCSE subjects do not really matter, the compulsory subjects (Maths/English/Science) are all you basically need, so make sure you get a good grade in these. History and German are pretty good, as knowing a language can help you get employed faster, it also looks good on your CV and History ties in with Economics (if you learn about Nazi Germany you'll see they talk about Hyperinflation etc.). For future reference, when you get to A levels, I'd pick the ones that are really relevant to what you want to do, and make sure you pick traditional subjects if you want to go to a good uni. I'm thinking about becoming an accountant/underwriter, so I've chosen to do Maths, Further Maths, History, English Lit and Economics after finishing school this year. Just try and enjoy what you're studying in GCSEs atm, your choices are fine

Yeah, your GCSEs don't really matter - as long as you get a good grade in maths. You can then go on to do maths at A Level and perhaps do a business subject too (no specific gcses required to do these). And then study accounting at Uni.
