  Hickeys are usually given as a sign of ownership or pride in their BF/GF. If it's in a visible area (neck) then it's so other people know they are taken. It's a possession thing. If they're in areas that are not easily seen, it's sort of a secret reminder of the events that happened prior or after the hickey marking (sex/first kiss). Either way it's a marking that shows someone has been loved/claimed. I find that guys usually don't let girls hickey them and prefer to do it to girls. But it differs with the person. Some people like the sensation given when they are given a hickey. Some people find it a turn on. I'd say it was more of a teenager trend. They want to show off their BF/GF so mark them.
