Toronto is way better for career opportunities than Montreal, right?
-
Hello all, Well not "all" exactly. This might be a question for Montrealers and ex-Montrealers. I have decided to head to Toronto for better career opportunities, I know, I know Toronto is not Montreal, I get. But I don't really have a choice, I am a visible minority anglophone with average French. I have tried to improve my French, but no dice, cuz I'm an idiot and can't pick it up. From my experience here in Montreal, it seems like managers and presidents and anyone in a position of power is Francophone and they tend to look out for their own and promote their own. Toronto, well the rest of Canada seems more multicultural than Quebec. I have friends and family in manager positions, I have seen visible minorities with president and CEO titles, something you really don't see here in Quebec. Is Toronto really "unlivable"? I'm sure Toronto has **** MOntreal doesn't, like Montreal has qualities that Toronto doesn't. Am I wrong in thinking this? Am I generalizing too much?

Answer:
Toronto's not unlivable. Three of the world's ten most livable cities are Canadian. All three of those rank in the top five. And Toronto's one of them: Link - http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2011/08/30/melbourne-vancouver-liveable-cities_n_941811.html Ontario is Canada's most populated Province. Toronto is Canada's biggest city. So it's where anyone from anywhere in the country will find the most opportunities.

I lived in Toronto and Montreal and I loved Toronto. There's tons of stuff to do, places to go, and way more work -- esp if you don't speak French well. And in Toronto there is no minority.

It really depends on your career, but in general I think you are right. I've been in Quebec 40 years and I was lucky to be in the one field that does not demand perfect French (Teaching English) . In the early 70's most of my friends left for Ontario and there has been a slow trickle Westward ever since! It seems to me that a French person who can string together 5 English words is considered bilingual but an English person must Speak and write flawless French to get the same consideration.
