Whats better self catering or catering at uni?
-
Can you tell me what the pros and cons of self catering and catering are at uni please and in particular at Canterbury??? Thanks :)

Answer:
- Self-catering you know exactly what is going into your food, can avoid any fears about the hygiene of canteen staff and issues if you have any food allergies. - Catering can work out cheaper as a lot of university meals are part subsidised. - Self-catering can be more expensive as you can end up buying more food than you need, waste food you don't use and impulse buy groceries. - Catering you are guaranteed to get three square meals a day. - Catering might have a narrow selection of foods each day, not good if you're a fussy eater. - Catering you HAVE to take your meals at a certain time each day, and if you miss those times you are going hungry. - Self-catering you can buy the foods you like. - Self-catering you can shop with your roommates to reduce the cost of bulk buying. - More of a sense of community being self-catered, cooking meals with and for your roomates. Less of a sense of a community when they leave your milk out and eat all of your cereal. - Catered you don't need to know how to cook. - Catered you may never learn HOW to cook! - No washing up involved with catering, avoids the inevitable pile up of week-old crockery rendering the sink unusable. Just a few I can think of. When I was at university I took the self-catering route. I think I preferred it as it was great being able to take it in turns to cook meals for the whole flat, and I don't think I could have stuck to a rigid schedule preferring to eat when I wanted to.

Pros - food is already paid for, so you don't have to worry about budgeting, cooking etc Cons - you have to eat at the mealtimes provided, or you don't get fed It's good if budget or cooking is an issue, but it does limit your movements around mealtimes.
