How do you size a western saddle seat?

What size dressage or hunt seat saddle do I need?

  • I know everyone is built differently but I'm trying to get some idea of what size saddle to get. I am 5'6 and weigh about 120..so I'm quite slim. My horse is a somewhat petite appendix so she needs a more narrow-medium saddle. I plan to get a dressage and hunt seat saddle but probably will get dressage first. Wondering what size I might focus on trying. 16 inch? 17 inch? What is average size for a gal my size? Thanks!!

    I'm 5'5 and 140lbs so I'm a little chubby but I ride fine in a 15inch western saddle. My other saddle is a 16in and I find it too big. English I've ridden in a 16 fine so u might be a 15. Size also seems to vary brand to brand. My friend and I have the same seat size but her saddle feels small on me.

Ideally you should get your saddle fitted for you and your horse. You could get a General Purpose saddle. Go to a tack shop that sells saddles and try out a few to help get the correct size for you and then focus on the width etc. for your horse.

16 or 17 sounds about right, it's what I use. But make sure it fits your horse properly too

It's got a lot to do with the length of your leg as much as anything else, given your height I would say a 17' would be better but go to a saddlery store and try a couple of different sizes but be aware different makes have slightly different sizings and the shape of the seat makes a difference.

it depends on how long your legs are. If you ride with a trainer you could get their opinion. A big part of it is how the saddle feels so try riding in it before you buy

I think probably a 17 inch. I'm 5'2 and i have a 16.5 inch.
