What is the softest substance known to man?

What is the hardest substance known to man?

  • Keep in mind when answering that density and resistance to pressure are completely different from hardness. For example, gold and lead are very, very dense, but rank fairly poorly on the hardness scale. Diamond is hard because it's nearly impossible to scratch. Anyway, I know that diamond is the hardest discovered natural substance. But, are there any harder substances created by man? Such as a heavily reinforced alloy or something? If there IS an artificial material harder than diamond, what is it?

  • Answer:

Aggregated diamond nanorod. Developed in Germany in 2005.

Wurtzite boron nitride (WBN) has beaten out diamond as the hardest substance. It has a very similar structure to diamond, but the atoms it is made up with is different (compared to pure carbon for diamond).
