What are the council tax rates in Edinburgh, Scotland?

Council Tax Edinburgh?Please help!?

  • Hi! I'm moving to Edinburgh for work I'm 26 and I'm not a student anymore but it seems like only students want to share flats and professionals live on their own! Since I can't afford an entire rent I'm looking for a double-room and I did find some (with students) but..it's only up to me to pay council taxes! A guy told me that if there's an apartment of 4 and 3 of them are students, I have to pay only a quarter of it! Is it true? Can anyone please HELP me to find out? Council tax is right but super expensive!:( Thanks

  • Answer:

As the only non student you would be eligible for the 25% single adult discount so you would be liable for 75% council tax account for the property. If you were sharing say with 1 professional and 2 students then you and the other professional would be liable for the full 100% of the bill.

It would depend on your rental agreement and the house set up. If you and the others are a single household and hold a joint tenancy i.e. you would all have moved in on the same day and pay for the whole house then you would have to pay 75% of the full council tax charge. There would be a 25% discount as all the other occupants were students and you would be a non discounted person. You would be the only named liable person on the bill. If you have moved to a property that is HMO, where you all have seperate tenancy agreements, you are not a single household, you probably will all have moved in at different times, you are only renting a room and sharing other facilities - then the landlord would be liable for the council tax charge. He would be able to claim the 25% discount. Most landlords in this situation usually only want to rent to all students though so that they are not charged council tax.
