What does New Age music mean?

Can I Get Into A Music College?

  • I want to get into a music college...you know, where you mostly study music! Now, I don't mean Julliard or, Eastman, etc. I want a good music college where I can major an instrument take a language class, etc. Now, the problem is, no one explains anything to me. Some time back, I thought the only music college someone can go to is something like Julliard and you need to be a prodigy. However, recently someone told me that there are a bunch of common music colleges that most people get into. Do you HAVE to be exceptionally talented and HAVE to have started playing an instrument before the age of 10? If I were fifteen, and I started to play the cello, would there be a chance that I'd get into any music college? I hear people telling me that no matter the type of college you can never enter (and major an instrument) if you didn't start at a very young age. Then someone else tells me that in this random college the acceptance rate is high so I can make it in!!! Nothing makes sense! Please enlighten me!!! Also, is there a difference between a "music school" and a "music college?"

  • Answer:

Look for a "regular" college that has a music major. You want one that offers a BFA in music. You will need to audition for any college with a good music department, and get in academically. Yes you will need training and a natural talent. No you are not required to have been playing an instrument since you were 10. So you need to apply and get in academically and audition for the music department to major in music. The colleges whole acceptance rate may be high-that doesn't mean getting into a music major is easy Butler University in Indiana has a great music department. You really need to go on some college visits. Meet with admissions and a professor from the music department. ask if you can sit in on a music class. See for yourself what it is like. Call up at least two weeks ahead of time to the admissions office to set up meetings. Get a tour of the campus too. My daughter is a dance major. We went to nine different colleges and meet with the head of the dance department and sat in on a dance class at each one. Made a HUGE difference to where she ended up applying.

You need to use Google. "Music colleges" is a good start. One site on the list that search term brings up is Wikipedia's list of music colleges. You need only ears to know that people don't have to be extremely talented to get into them -- the very best ones, yes, as with any major, but there are many colleges. Some teach only the arts (instruments, voice, dance) and some teach many subjects, including music. You can bet that more than one student in a music college picked up an (but not his first) instrument for the first time in that college. Educate yourself. It is SO easy with the Internet. Don't rely on what people say. Remember, for almost all of the time people have lived, they thought the world was flat. Also, they like to hear themselves talk and to stomp all over other people's hopes, dreams, ideas, and plans. Use the Internet to find colleges and music programs, their admission requirements, courses of study, graduation requirements, information on their students and the students' avilities, etc.
