My 98 Honda Prelude overheats when at stop lights?
-
I have a 98 Honda Prelude it ran just fine and all the sudden it started over heating well we let it cool down and let my boy friends brother drive it and he said that it just shut off on him but never over heated. It wouldn't turn on and we changed the spark plugs and the spark plug wires. We changed the oil drained the radiator and put in a new thermostat. It started to run fine and cranked up good. Well we were going down the road and stopped at a stop light and it started to over heat again we took off and it cooled down. Then all the sudden we started having trouble getting it to start up. You have to pump the gas real fast for it to start. Please help and don't be rude. I am a girl so i don't know much about this stuff.

Im not sure what is going on but one problem is leading to another. Your car I think has an electric fan and at some point the relay that helps keep the car cool had a problem and stopped working. This can cause the engine to overheat and stop running. this is not a good sign and I think your car way have blown a head gasket ( because it is having trouble at start up) when your car overheats and stops it can damage or crack the head and the car will run a lot worse especially when cold. Your mechanic needs to do some diagnostic work and see if that is indeed the problem. DO NOT HAVE SOMEONE BYPASS THE cooling fan all this does is burn the fan out soone rbecase it runs all the time and its easy to forget its running and end up with a dead battery and the fan itself is several hundred dollars its cheaper to get the temprature relay fixed than bypass it to try and save money. Im not sure exactly what happened to your car but the fact that it has begun to run badly on top if the overheating leads me to believe it overheated one too many times. best of luck hope it works ot .

yea sounds like a fan relay if you dont kno how to fix that you can wire it directly with a wire and a switch and then u can manually turn it on and off
Trevor
The automatic fan isnt working and if it is then it can be a lot other problems so first have the fan checked.

overheating at a stop light is usually the fans or fan relay malfunction

If your car overheats at stop lights, avoid them.
