How long does it typically take to pass a kidney stone?

Where is my kidney stone and how long would it take to pass?

  • After last night's agonising pain and restless night I decided to pop to the doctors with suspected UTI as I’ve had the symptoms for over 2 weeks, back pain in the last few days. The doctor examined me and recons I have a kidney stone, especially since it’s genetic in my family. I don’t know how many I have or where it is, this is the first time for me to experience it. My bladder feels bloated yet it’s empty. I have a lot of pain around my hips on my back. The doctor found some blood in my urine and it’s slightly cloudy and almost clear. It’s really difficult to bend over. How do you know where the stone(s) are and how long does it normally take to pass? When will I know when it has passed? I’ve started to drink a lot more water than normal. Is there any other advice you recommend? Note: I’m female

I didnt real all the responses but let me give you the facts because I have had MULTIPLE stones. The greatest pain is when they are coming down the tube from the kidneys, this can last a few hours. You do usually have back pain the night before you have one getting ready to come down. Sometimes you may think the back pain is just from your bed....its not....its a stone giving you warning. Anyway, once it makes its way down to the bladder it can remain there for a couple weeks. Drink a TON of water to try and flush it. When it comes it will scare you more than hurt you. You usually will know when it is getting ready to come. I usually get little spike like feelings down there. Now how to prevent them. I was put on a low sodium diet. This has worked. Doc told me I had too much salt in my system. I was passin stones left and right, since the diet I have been two years stone free.

Get a CT scan to determine location and size, you may have more than one as well. There is no natural way to dissolve a stone, these are all urban myths. Strain your urine so that you can detect a stone should it pass, and you will know as it hurts when it travels. It can take weeks, months or even over a year to pass.

Most stones are calcium. vinegar dissolves calcium. try Italian salad dressing, pickled artichoke hearts or citrus fruit. Filter your drinking water.

Kidney stones are mineral deposits that form within the kidneys and are made up of mostly calcium, as tod suggests. These deposits are extremely painful and make it difficult, if not impossible, for a person to urinate The only real ways to know the exact location and size of a kidney stone or stones is to have an MRI or sonogram procedure or x-ray series at the hospital. You'll know when you are "passing a stone" if you feel extreme cramping and/or pain in your lower back and abdomen - basically you are trying to pass a small pebble through an even smaller opening and the blood in your urine is a sign of micro-tearing of the tissues within the kidney itself.
