What is a Response Essay?

Hey AP history kids!! What happens if i don't know what to write for a free response essay?

  • I'm super terrified for the free response questions. I was looking at previous ones over the years and they are sooo hard. I have tremendous difficulty with them and my teacher barely even gave us these type of essays throughout the year. What do i do if i can't answer it? Should i bs it? I'm just not good at BSing things. Oh and btw how many paragraphs should we make it. And if we leave out one free response essay will it make my grade drop a lot

    First of all, answer every question. Even if you have to entirely make it up. I know that from AP World that as long as you have the correct essay format, they have to give you a three on the essay regardless of if any of it is correct. I think all the essays are equally weighted, so definitely do not spend all your time on the essay you know and no time on the essay you don't know. That's probably the worst you could do for your score. Also, keep in mind that all the essays are curved!! You don't have to do well, you just have to do around the same or a little bit better than what most people score. Best of luck! :)

Yes. The FRQs are integral, and honestly rather easy. Just make sure you know the material. Write a thesis that outlines the points in your essay. Four to Five paragraphs are ideal, but you can get away with 3 if the point is clearly made. Example: Contrast the policies of Klemens von Metternich and Otto von Bismarck in their political and ideological policies. Thesis: While Metternich focused on a repressive policy centered around limiting the spread of liberalism and the Principle of Intervention, Bismarck was focused on a policy of realpolitick, and utilized whatever tools he deemed necessary to proliferate the power of the newly formed German Empire. 1st paragraph: Talk about Metternich's Concert of Europe and its role in the revolutions of 1820 and other European affairs 2nd paragraph: Talk about Bismarck's national policies and contrast them with Metternich's Conclusion: Restate thesis and conclude. FRQs are EZ PZ if you know the material, and at least on the AP Euro AP you get to choose 2 of 6 FRQs to do, so just make sure you study your prep book and have a good knowledge of important events! The multiple choice is the hard part!
