  • Answer:

You say everything was plugged into the surge protector? How about the cable for the wall to the TV/DVR/directv/cable box? ANY and I mean ANY unprotected/ungrounded connection with a near by lightning strike, can take out anything plugged in, including the surge protectors that may have taken hits from power spikes and brownouts in the past. So if the coax coming into the house is not being run through a UPS or surge/spike protector, that may very well be the source for the KILLING strike that gets anything connected to and through it. Check for resets on all the equipment involved to make sure they are ok. Plug the surge protector into an outlet somewhere else in the home and plug things into to (lamps, radios etc) to see if they work. Also surge protectors to not always save items plugged into them, due to the length of the surge. The longer a surge last, the more likely you are to end up with toasted equipment, plugged into it.
