Cost of building a fence?

• Im going to do the labor myself but what is the cheapest type of wood fencing to buy in Texas and where? The back yard is 400 ft all around and the fence needs to be 6' privacy fence. I also have a chain link fence, covered in poison oak, I need to remove and have no Idea how :) Thank youuuu

  The cost of a fence depends on what type of fence you intend to build and whether you will build the sections yourself or buy them pre-made. Here in the Pacific Northwest, typical, 8' fence sections run about $36 per section at Lowes. That figures to $4.50/foot. Thus, a 400' fence will cost you $1800 for just the pre-made fence sections. You also need to consider the 4x4 posts and the concrete footers for the posts. You need to decide what you will do yourself and what you will contact out. Oh yes, don't forget fasteners for the fence sections. This all figures into the fence cost. Then, there's finishing. If you build a redwood or cedar fence, you will need to finish the fence with either an oil or acrylic based finish to retard deterioration. A gallon of Behr premium acrylic finsih runs about $34/gallon at Home Depot. One gallon covers about 300 square feet of fence (they say). My advice is for you to do your homework and look at the project from different aspects. Material and labor costs in my area will be different from those in your area. Do your homework. As for the chain link fence, remove the poison oak from the fence, sever the chain from the posts, and dig out the posts (not as easy as it sounds without equipment). You could use the holes from the old fence for the footers for your new fence.
