What to choose: business or electrical/computer engineering?

HELP with major? Business or Math+Econ double major, UMichigan?

  • Hello, I am a going to be an incoming sophomore at the University of Michigan next year. I had a good freshman year and wound up getting into the Ross School of Business. This brings up quite a dilemma for me as I will soon be forced to choose between going to Ross or double majoring in Math and Economics. Reasons for attending Ross include the fact that it is a very prestigious name and (from what ive heard) name is everything in business. Hopefully I would be able to get a good job right out of college. If I went to the business school I would also take a lot of math classes and hopefully set myself up for the possibility of graduate school in something like financial engineering perhaps. Then on the other hand, there are SO many business majors and you really dont learn much in business school. I really dont want to be stuck in a position where I have no job and practically no skills because i majored in business. My other option would be to double major in math and economics. This will certainly be a lot tougher to complete but at least I will have a practical degree that can be applied to various fields. However, it would most likely be a lot harder to find a job becuase the degree doesnt carry a name like Ross attached to it. Im having a tough time deciding between these two career paths. In addition, I am not certain what I want to do with my life but I assume I will end up in something business/finance/insurance/math related in the NYC area. Both of these options have their advantages and disadvantages as far as I can tell. If anybody with knowledge of the job market/business world/wall street/NYC jobs can provide some further insight on my problem I would greatly appreciate it. Any advice will help. Thanks for reading

  • Answer:

Honestly, I think you are giving that "Ross" name more credit than its worth. When it comes to business, the only "name" that will EVER matter is where you got your MBA. No one cares about your undergrad. So go with the Math and Economics. I agree that it will make you stand out among the sea of business applicants. Anyone and everyone could be and is a business major. Not just anyone could handle a math or even economics major. You can always get an MBA later for fun if you want. :) That's my advice.
