Whats the best career choice if i want to work with children?
-
I love being around children. I graduated high school in 2010 and started college as an elementary education major. I initially wanted to be a kindergarten teacher because I spent my senior year of high school interning in a kindergarten class and fell in love with it! The problem is, every single time I tell family/friends/etc. that I want to be a teacher they tell me I should definitely rethink that decision because unfortunately it's not a promising career field anymore. Teachers in my area (and everywhere) are getting laid off left-n-right, and more and more schools are being shut down because of budgeting issues. Also, there’s the issue that teachers are not paid well at all for what we have to do, and we are highly taken advantage of. My family keeps saying they would feel horrible if I put myself in debt from student loans etc., and get my degree just to end up with a job that has nothing to do with “elementary education”. I understand where everyone is coming from, and the reality of the situation is really starting to hit me hard now that the school I loved and wanted to try to teach at when I graduated is being closed after this school year. So because of all this, I am starting to do research and try to find something else I could do instead of teaching. I would love, love, love to have a career working with children that pays well, has stability, and won’t be one of the first to be cut because of economy issues. Although children are my passion some other things I enjoy a lot are: cooking, baking, photography,scrap-booking, being around animals, doing community service projects, helping people, listening to problems and trying to find solutions and did I mention being around kids? :) I couldn't do anything that involved sick or dying children or animals!!!! I have too much of a heart for something like that. So jobs in hospitals and veterinarian offices are not options for me. Oh and I have a weak stomach scouldn'tuldn’t deal with a career that revolved around blood or other bodily fluids on a regular basis. If you want to suggest something because of my other interests I listed please feel free to, I’m open to any suggestions.

Answer:
I would consider a career as a child psychologist (you can work along prosecutors to help children in traumatic situations) or a social worker specializing with juveniles or as a juvenile probation officer.
