How can I change this sentence from passive to active?

How to change a sentence from passive voice to active voice?

  • I am writing a persuasive paper for English, and the spelling/grammar check on Microsoft Word says that 13% of my sentences have passive voice. Firstly, what is passive voice? And how do I change it to active voice?

  • Answer:

First, don't worry too much. Having 13% passive voice clauses is in the normal range for most well written work, so if the passive uses are the better way to say something, don't change them. Do worry that MS Word is correctly pointing out passive uses. That's getting into an area that is often difficult to analyze. MS Word often fails in much simpler tasks, so I'd be reluctant to accept its determination as correct.

A sentence in passive voice tells what "was done" "by" somebody/something. "The apple was eaten by the boy." A sentence in active voice tells who did what. "The boy ate the apple."

Passive voice definition : One of the two “voices” of verbs ( see also active voice). A verb is in the passive voice when the subject of the sentence is acted on by the verb. For example, in “The ball was thrown by the pitcher,” the ball (the subject) receives the action of the verb, and was thrown is in the passive voice. The same sentence cast in the active voice would be, “The pitcher threw the ball.” Active voice definition: One of the two “voices” of verbs ( see also passive voice). When the verb of a sentence is in the active voice, the subject is doing the acting, as in the sentence “Kevin hit the ball.” Kevin (the subject of the sentence) acts in relation to the ball. Hope this helps :)

It is quite complicated, but basically speaking VOICE refers to the "main actor" in a sentence. This usually comes first: *Joe ate the cake.* Is ACTIVE VOICE which means the subject or main actor of the sentence comes first. However, we can turn this into PASSIVE VOICE by writing this: "The cake was eaten by Joe." Generally speaking it's best to use ACTIVE as it's simpler to understand and clearer.
