Dog Food research What dog food is better?
-
My 3 year old chihuahua is on iams small breed, but I'm been switching him over to wellness, after I've started doing some research on where dog food is made, after the scare of the dog treats that were made in china making dogs sick, and also been looking into what is in my dog's food, and I wasn't happy with what I found in iams. (chicken by product and tons of corn and grain) My dog has colitis so I have to be careful with what and how much I feed him. So my question is what does your dog eat, and what dog food do you think is best? and I know each dog is different, but I'm looking for quality of the dog food, a dog food that's chalk full of fillers I want nutrients, so far I found that blue buffalo, wellness, and innova are at the top of the list, what is you opinion? Does anyone else have a dog with colitis and what do you feed your dog? Sorry for the long article

Answer:
I recommend Canidae Small Bites (would be easy for your chihuahua to eat). IAMS, Purina, Science Diet, and Eukanuba, on the other hand, are the brands to stay away from - they're utter garbage.

I recommend Back to Basics, Canidae, Spring Naturals, Wellness CORE, Earthborn, California Natural, or Acana. I also recommend researching a raw diet.
There are several different trains of thought when it comes to feeding your dog, and honestly, there isn't a whole lot of convincing research except for personal experience. You sound like a very responsible owner who is trying your best to keep your pet healthy, and I think that that's all that matters. Wellness actually was involved in the recent recalls, along with Natural Balance and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. I think it was a voluntary recall, however, but if you are wary of brands manufactured at Diamond plants, you might want to stay away from that. Lately, I've been more concerned about the safety of the food than the supposed quality. I feed Castor & Pollux Organix, which seems to have high quality ingredients, and is made in the United States. I'm not sure how to feel about grain free diets, high protein diets, or raw meat diets - some of them are probably fads and ways for marketers to get more money. Chicken by-products aren't the highest quality, but they are cheap, and they provide a source of protein, along with the corn. I would be less concerned about the exact ingredients than I would the overall product. I don't know much about colitis, and you probably need to speak with a veterinarian about the type of diet that is best for that condition. Otherwise, yes, Blue Buffalo is high quality, as well as Innova and Instinct. Taste of the Wild is high quality, but obviously has had some scary recalls lately. You would probably be fine with any of those brands.
Most dog food is horrible for your dog, I switched from hills puppy, which I thought was the best..its actually horrible to wellness, my dogs don't only love it but they are much healthier now and instead of eating one kibble they eat the whole bowl like they should!!! It has no scary preservatives etc. Definitly switch to wellness or blue wilderness I hear is good as well. Best of luck
Iams is crap. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ My dog eats raw. As far as kibble, I think Orijen, Acana, Wellness, ToTW, Fromm, Merrick are all good options.
