What is a .net .com and .org for?

If i was opening a non profit website for gaming avatars would i use .net? .com? .org? what if i was doing a profit one with also free ones? What if i did all profit no freebies? also is there a better choice than .net com or org?

Originally .com was intended for for-profit companies, .org for non-commercial organizations and .net for internet related companies and organizations, but there are no restrictions on who can register these or what purpose they are used for. Are are usually better off going for a .com if you can get it.
