How do I get a Wireless XBOX 360 controller to work on PC games using a USB?

I have recently downloaded some games but I would much prefer to use my XBOX controller to play them on my PC, I used to be able to do it when I had a PS3 so I'm guessing there must be some way to use an XBOX controller instead, I have found some software that I could use such as Pad2Key and Xpadder etc (But still if there is any other better software please let me know) and I would be able to figure my way out from there except the fact that I can not get my PC to pick up the controller, I have plugged it in and it has installed the drivers etc, any suggestions on what could be the issue or if it is even possible at all?

Doesnt work like that. You would have thought so but nope. Ive got a wireless Xbox 360 controller and thought that i can put the usb cable to it then into my pc, which would then find drivers etc.. and work. It works for the wired controllers just not the wireless ones. Only way round it is to purchase one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000MGVAAQ Ive got one and it works fine. I can play majority of my PC games with my controller now. Failing that, buy a wired controller just for PC use.
