Why wont my HD tv play my ps3 on 1080i please tell me why or if theirs a way to fix it?

i have the first manufactured playstation 3 (the fat one) i recently brought a new hd insignia tv 1080i 120hz and a Dynex hdmi wire but when i play games that are capable of playing 1080i it doesn't work it just plays in 720i i know its not the TV is it the PlayStation because of how old it is or is it the hdmi wire? please help and if you know show me how to fix this thank you.

It's the game. VERY few games are actually rendered fully in 1080, interlaced or progressive. This is because it's extremely time and cost heavy to do so. When you see the "1080i" or "1080p" on the back of a case, it's generally referring to the cutscenes and not the game itself.
