What are some cheaper colleges or universities for international students in Canada?

In Canada, should we allow military recruiters in high schools and colleges/universities?

  • I personally think we should. Our Military is undersized. Canada needs a strong and capable military. People are arguing that joining the Canadian Forces puts you in a unjust war guaranteed. This may have been the case with Afghanistan, but I think we did a bit of good over there. We built schools, roads etc. Students in high school and colleges/universities are either approaching military age or are at or above military age (17). What do you guys and girls think?

Disclaimer: I'm an American - so my opinion isn't worth much on this topic. I think they should. When in the US Army, I had the opportunity to work with some Canadian soldiers in Kosovo. Canada's military is well-respected by other militaries (though we Americans and Brits have to give them a hard time about being Canadian of course...that's just how soldiers are). Canadian troops were even well-liked by the locals in Kosovo and Bosnia (I assume the same is generally true in Afghanistan). They are known for being professional but friendly and treating all sides fairly (Some soldiers - like the French - are often seen as "taking sides."). Canada was also one of the few contries that at least tried to do something to prevent genocide in Rwanda. I've never heard anything about the Canadian military that has done anything but bring honor to their country. Were I Canadian, I would consider it a privilege to have military recruiters working on my campus trying to enlist young, intelligent citizens.

Why? Does the Canadian military have any problem with recruitment numbers? No. It's size is limited by its budget. It simply doesn't have enough money to hire more soldiers or ships, tanks, bases, etc. for them to use. Already 80% of its forces are reservists and it turns away large number of applicants each year. It has been closing recruitment offices in many cities for decades. I'm sure most Canadians know that the Canadian military exists. It advertises on the web, newspapers (for local positions), television, and has signs infront of bases/head quarters. There isn't much point in recruiting in high schools or universities if you don't have a shortage of applicants. Kind of a waste of money getting more people to apply if you are only going to turn them away.

I can assure you not much "good" was done in Afghanistan. If anything the country has been more destabilized since the invasion. Whereas there at least used to be some economy before, the country has devolved into primarily relying on illegal drug production and export. Take it from someone who lives in a country with a military gone full havoc, you don't need a bigger one. Canada has no true threats against it, its only border country is a strong ally and it is separated from everyone else by thousands of miles of ocean. Considering how few nations have blue water navies they are sitting quite fine.

Most larger area's have a recruiting office. If someone wants to know how to join they can call or go there in person. And the size of the CF is not due to the fact recruiters don't run around school or university campuses. Our country has a population of 35,000,000. Our country itself is small in terms of population therefore we will have a smaller military. In order to make the military larger requires much more of a budget. You have to balance based on needs. Unless the CF were to get an expanded budget which allowed more positions to open up then there is no sense in what you purpose. Even if they did do that and folks want to join it should be ON THEM to contact the CF not to wait for the CF to come looking for them.

I think military recruiters should be allowed in public schools for career events, not just fishing around for prey on a daily basis.
