What is it like to be a Surgical Tech?

How would you describe a great Patient Care Tech? What would you like to see in a PCT?

  • I just got a job as a patient care tech, and I'm VERY excited! I'll be going to nursing school soon, and I can't wait to serve patients and aide co-workers on this unit! (Yay Children's Hospitals!) Just a quick question: For all of those who work in hospitals, what do you look for in a patient care tech? In other words, how would you describe a fantastic patient care tech that you would want to work with - so much so that you look forward to having them on your shift? Background: I volunteered as an EMT for 2.5 years in college during my first degree. (Nursing will be my second degree.) I'm a very reliable worker: always work my shift, arrive 30 minutes early, make sure everything is stocked, take detailed patient reports, stay late, resolve all issues before leaving my shift, clean up and restock before leaving, pick up extra shifts on short notice, work holidays, go for continued training beyond what is required, etc. I work hard, and I don't mind cleaning up blood and other body fluids. I'm good at taking BPs, too. (This skill was put to the test many times from riding in a loud, bumpy ambulance.) In addition, I can take constructive criticism well. (NJ paramedics like to dish this out, especially when they get to know you.) Most importantly, I own up to my mistakes, even if it makes me look stupid. I never make up numbers (BPs, heart rate, pulse ox, etc.). But for all of you hospital workers out there, how would you describe a great PCT? Could you tell me about some great PCTs that you have worked with? What made them standout? And for the families and former/current patients out there, what could I do as a PCT that would make your stay more comfortable? Thanks!

It sounds to me like you already described one!
