How to quit my internship?

How do you quit an internship properly?

  • Hi, everyone. I know my explanation is long... please try to bare with me I was wondering if I could get some advice on how to quit an unpaid internship in a way that makes me not seem as if I am being rude. I applied, was interviewed, and accepted for a wildlife rehab internship over the spring and I started working last week. It is unpaid and there isn't a qualified vet working there (so I don't profit either monetarily or via hours [prevet students have to get 400 "vet hours to apply to vet school]). Though I don't expect to be more than cleaning for a while (which is the case), I am already very unhappy with the internship because so far there isn't a schedule. From day to day we turn up when the head lady says and leave when she says (My first 2 days I worked 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm and 6:30 am to 3:00 pm). With only a days notice of my schedule I am not able to see well to any of my other commitments. Also I feel as if the head lady is inconsiderate and I'm not really learning anything. The place is pretty out of the way so I waste a lot of gas money getting there. I am already starting to dread my work hours (even though I only just started) and I feel stressed and angry after/ during my time there. Do you think I would be justified in trying to seek a position else were that I could get some sort of credit or payment for? If so how would I go about telling my current employers that I am not going to continue volunteering for the rest of the summer?

  • Answer:

Yes, I think you'd be justified in quitting. Give her a couple weeks notice though to try to find someone else.
