What does unsupported mode mean?

What does packet mode computer networks mean?

  • I am doing a research paper on internet routers and I wanted to explain how routers work by explaining data packets first. But every where I look I see explanations for data packets like "In computer networking, a packet is a formatted unit of data carried by a packet mode computer network". What does that sentence mean, what doest packet mode computer networks mean in plain english??? Please, help me explain in human language what that sentence means and also, if you have great places where I can get further information about internet routers in regards to their history and how they work - in plain english - I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Answer:

Packet mode is just another term for packet switching. Packets are a file or any information for this matter, "smashed into bits" (or packaged into smaller pieces for a simpler term) and sent over the wire at the speed of light from router to router. Each packet has a header, destination, etc. Packet switching can explain this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_mode
