How To Install Windows?

How can I format the 20GB HDD on my Windows 98 Laptop in order to Install Windows 95 and Windows 98?

  • Hey. I bought a laptop on eBay the other day with Windows 98 pre-installed. I also have a copy of Windows 95 at home. I would like to be able to dual-boot Windows 95 and Windows 98 on the laptop. It has a 20GB Partition. I would like to know as well, what size partition would you recommend installing Windows 95/98 on? I know Windows 95 doesn't support partitions over a certain size, so I'd like to know what size you would recommend (e.g. Windows 95 on a 5GB Partition and Windows 98 on a 15GB Partition). Thanks in advance. - T

You can't They were designed for far smaller hard drives (under 10GB).

you shouldnt have any problems (as long as you use fat32) you can make them as big as you want. i would recomend 3 partitions. one primary for windows 95 with about 5-8gb one primary for windows 98 with 8-10gb one extended with the rest, for Data only. (this third drive will be shared among both OS with your documents etc) remember to install windows 98 last so he would create the boot menu.

there is freeware called parted magic that will allow you to format and partition your hard drive into two partitions of fat32 you will have to boot from cd (might have to change bios settings) after that install your windows 98 on first partition and then 95 on the second although i dont approve of this decision, there is no need to have windows 95 if you have windows 98 i would highly recommend installing windows xp if you have more than 256mb of ram its the BEST windows edition for its process amount

A full install of Windows 98 on a FAT16 drive requires 225 MB of free hard disk space, but may range from between 165 MB and 355 MB, depending on your computer configuration and that options that you choose to install. A full install of Windows 98 on a FAT32 drive requires 175 MB of free hard disk space, but may range from between 140 MB and 255 MB, depending on your computer configuration and the options that you choose to install. Windows 95 goes in first then windows 98. You can use fdisk to partition the hard drive.
