How to protect your Scrum Half from getting tackled? (Rugby)?
-
I'm playing as a flanker this year and when I look up tips online a lot of them say "provide maximum protection for your scrum half." Only thing is I have no idea how to do that without obstructing the opposition. Usually for me to have to protect my scrum half my team would have to be on offense (protecting him/her from getting tackled). But if we're on offense then how am I supposed to stop an opposition player from tackling my teammate? In rugby it's illegal to hit a player who isn't carrying the ball and it's illegal to purposely get in the way of a player trying to make a tackle (obstruction). So how the hell do I protect my scrum half from getting slammed? We're playing an extremely aggressive and skilled (not to mention huge) team on May 26th and I don't want those bastards slamming my scrummie lol. BY THE WAY I only want to protect my scrummie in (or after) scrums! For example if we win the ball in the scrum, I want the scrum half to be able to pick it up and pass it to the backs without getting slammed too quick or too hard.

Answer:
the best way in a scrum I found being a scrum half myself is to have your flanker just extend his out side leg and bump the opposing scrum half a little bit tell him to play dirty like anyother time just be sneaky as long as he is still bound on to the scrum its not a penalty

The halfback needs to work with the No.8 in regards to channelling the ball to the correct place for the 1/2 back to have easy access to the ball also the 1/2 back must have a good dive pass to be able to elude his opposite number,by the way don't get too protective of your 1/2 back,if he's good enuff he won't get caught or else he's gonna learn to get better.

you cant really in scrums unless your an 8 but tell your number 8 that he can secure the ball by keeping it between his legs and in open play id suggest watching richie mccaw on youtube and watch how he plays he has a reputation of being a dirty player but does it so well the ref never sees it just watch him carefully.

Join at the back of a ruck. That way it extends the ruck back a little bit longer giving your h/b more time. Also join at the hip of the person already in the ruck. When you get a few players in there you form a wall which also protects the h/b. The Queensland Reds used this in their winning season to protect Will Guinea. Check it out if you have time.

In scrums as long as you are attached to the scrum you can obstruct the defender. You grab him or pull him back but there's nothing like a bit of hip swung into him. In lineouts, rucks and mauls, it is really up to all the forwards to make sure he gets good, safe ball.

Im a scrummie myself and what I find quite effecient is, my flanker at scrums usualy when we win it the swing out their hips and stretch legs back (but remember to keep you shoulder binded to the scrum) so that the scrum halve either has to climb over you or go around, at rucks, do what we south africans call "scatter brain" if u hav ball at back of ruck get a friend and create pillars on the advantage line while staying binded make a horizontal line on advantage line do not hold or pull the opposition scrummie back as that is holdin and will cause penalty against you
