What is a good, creative way to start an Autobiography?

How do you start an autobiography?

  • Please answer my mum has had an extraordinary life and she's decided to write an autobiography! She has all of the bits, but doesn't know how to start it! Thanks co-operation greatly appreciated..:)

    There are two schools of thought: 1) David Copperfield method: ' Chapter 1 - I am born.' 2) Tristram Shandy method: (author apologises that he hasn't got to the point where he is born, in the fourteenth chapter).

If I was to write an autobiography I would start at the beginning from my first memory as a child then work up to present day...isn't that how all autobiographies are meant to be? I would also speak to other people like family & friends, especially parents & grandparents for details that maybe your mum has missed or can't remember...good luck...

I would start with today and look back. Something like, "It occurred to me that I should note down some of the things I have seen and done in my life. So I sat down and started writing"

An amusing personal anecdote of some sort to get the reader interested. Then go into immediate family history (where mom and pop came from, how they met, etc), birth & childhood, and so on.
