How much acreage is in a lot?

Cutting Down Trees on 8 Acre Lot?

  • Hello internet! I had a quick question for you. My husband and I are moving to NH sometime next year. We recently purchased an 8 acre property outside of Rye, NH. It is completely forested. I wanted to cut down a lot of the trees, but I'm wondering about prices? We aren't looking to deforest it completely, but we do need about 7000 square feet free to build a house and a little more for the driveway. The entire acreage is filled to the brim with trees. I've never had a tree cut down in my life so I have no idea what the general price is for such a thing or if they do 'bulk' cuttings for cheaper. If someone could help me out a little bit that'd be greatly appreciated!

Good advice from Charlie F. The value of the trees to a lumber mill will depend upon the species of tree, the diameter, the straightness of the trunk and how accessible it is. Unfortunately, these are also characteristics of trees you may want to keep so getting paid for the wood may mean you have to surrender the better trees. If you can afford to have a professional tree company come and cut only the ones you don't want, you may end up with a nicer looking lot. They will likely give you a better break on the price if you have lots of trees but it will be hard to tell as they usually bid the jobs in a lump sum. Get at least 3 bids if you can for comparisons. If you are at all DIY-minded. Watch how they do the trimming and cutting -- ask a few questions if you can do so without bugging them. If your lot is heavily wooded, you will be doing more trimming and removal in the future. It will be a lot cheaper if you can at least take on the smaller projects yourself. If you DIY, keep in mind that timber felling is the second most hazardous occupation in this country (behind working on fishing boats) & quite a bit riskier than being a cop. Know what you are doing. Know your limits. And always put safety first.

Before approching any tree companies find out who owns lumber mills and or logging companties in your area. Show them the land and ask them how much they will pay you for trees your willing to sell to them. It all depends on how much the lumber on your property is worth.

Some people will pay you to cut the trees down for the trees. Asking and checking around can get some information. They sell the trees for themselves. They have the equipment and trucks and know where to sell them. If they are oak trees someone will want them for fire wood. They will cut them for free. If you pay someone it can be $100.00 a tree. You will have to find out: Do they leave stumps? If they do you have to pay to have them removed. Do they take the limbs? Tree cutters here use shredders to put the trees in and they shred them up real fast. Due to the drought a lot of dead trees are being cut down in this area. Trees are being cut down all around us. $100.00 a tree and they get shredded. Live trees are the same price. The trees are being cut down to make room for building houses.
