Is alcohol going to make me fat?
-
Since August I've lost 55 pounds and I want to lose more and keep it off. My main concern about gaining weight is alcohol. In my first year at university I drank heavily and gained 20 pounds; I used to get drunk 3 or 4 times a week and eat crap on top of that. Now these days I dont drink much; I did quit drinking for a few months, now I've decided to start again, but I know I dont need to get ridiculously drunk like I did before. I stick to alcohol which has less calories like a single vodka and diet coke. Before I drank everything like alcopops, shots, wine, sometimes cocktails, jagerbombs. I went out last night and put a shot of vodka in my coffee (lol i was just feeling inventive) and when I went out I had a single vodka and diet coke. All in all that was probably 150 cals altogether. I stuck to my daily calories allowance, I had slightly less than 1500 cals including the alcohol and I went to the gym yesterday and danced. Will I still gain weight, because I know alcohol affects fat burning or something and I know alocohol can make you bloated; it bloated me a lot at uni. Do you think 2-4 drinks on a night out like diet coke with vodka, malibu or bacardi (all with leas fat) would be ok?

Answer:
No type of alcohol has fat in it, so choose a distilled spirit that you like and mix with something low cal. Vodka is fine. I would point out to you that artificial sweeteners have been linked to weight gain for reasons that are unclear, but the data is irrefutable. Alcohol can be fattening because it is high in calories, not because of the way your body processes it or that it somehow affects your metabolism. The bloating is because of the cycle of dehydration/rehydration when you drink a lot, it causes third spacing. No matter what new kind of juju diet you read about, weight gain or loss is all about calories in vs. calories burned, period. Exercise helps because muscle burns more calories even at rest. So, eat a healthy balanced diet, get your exercise, keep an eye on your calorie count and feel free to have a few cocktails occasionally.

The problem with the calories in alcohol is not that they're more fattening in any way, but the fact the body sees them as more efficient to expend so uses those up first storing whatever other calories you've obtained from food earlier in the day. Couple that with the booze munchies, eating crap that sober you'd probably leave well alone, and you can start putting the pounds on again. All I can suggest is that you eat your main meal before you go out, keep an eye on your intake and do it less often - the least calorific would be a clear spirit like Vodka and mixed with Diet Coke or Soda Water, as you've been doing.

As long as you watch the calories and/or work off the excess, it doesn't make a lot of difference where the calories come from. Maybe if you're really sensitive to alcohol it will make you bloated (drink lots of water), but moderate amounts like you describe should be fine.

Alcohol is chock-full of empty calories-- it's even worse with mixers. Moderate alcohol can be part of an empty diet, but don't overdo it. You definitely don't want to know how many calories are in malibu.

Beer will make you fat. Alcohol usually can be worked out fairly easyly. Unless you drink those fruity sweet drinks then the sugar in them will make you gain weight.

As long as you stick to your daily calorie allotment, you won't get fat. You might bloat, but when the gas dissipates you'll be the same size you were before.
