In musical terms, what is an "Aria"?

What was unique about the musical oklahoma in terms of the development of musical theatre in america?

  • a. it was the first broadway musical produced in the united states b. it was the first musical in america that had all singing and no spoken lines c. it was the first broadway musical that had a multi ethnic cast d. it was the first musical where each song contributed to the development of the plot or the emotional state of the character

  • Answer:

D Look up musicals prior to Oklahoma! Beautiful songs, but really didn't further the plot at all. It was basically almost like a vaudeville show of act, dance, sing a song, back and forth, but they weren't really that connected. Rogers and Hammerstein pioneered the idea of USING the songs to further the story.

I'm in the show right now!! I don't think its A because it was written in the 40s, and there were broadway shows before that Not B because there are lines and talking Not C because I don't believe there were many multi ethnic people... it is D because every song contributed to the development of the plot or the emotional state of the character." I love oklahoma!

Broadway Starlet!

Not a fan of any of the answers, but I believe D is what your teacher is looking for. Oklahoma! was the first show done in the modern style of Broadway shows and had development of plot and character through song.
