Tips to not get nervous when public speaking?
-
I have to present to my biology class. I've done it before and I was nervous, kept looking at the screen, and just was like "Uhhhh" and was silent for thirty seconds because I lost my place on the screen where I was reading. But that day in the last class I also presented my Spanish poster and was like "Yeah" and clapped for myself in the end and wasn't as nervous. I think it's because in bio class I'm stuck between the chalkboard with the screen hanging down and the lab desk with like twenty two other kids right in front of the desk. Plus I don't have any closer friends in that class so it's a bit harder. Any tips for not getting nervous and making eye contact without panicing?

Answer:
Hi! I had the same problem you did! Last year, I joined a public speaking club at my school, which was super scary at first. Reading my speech in front of strangers and judges made me realize something though. I have no problem reading other peoples work, I just can't present my own. I did the exact same thing when doing my science project, and ended up with a pretty bad score. Basically here's what I do: 1. PRACTICE. I can't even say this enough. Read it to your friends, family, record yourself, make a youtube video, just practice as much as you can! 2.Realize there's nothing to be scared of. Most of those people in your class are just as nervous, just better at hiding it. Plus if you go first, everyone will worry about their presentation and not pay attention to yours. 3. Go slow. When your scared, you'll rush through and everyone will completely miss what you're saying. 4. BREATH. Ah, another important one. Before you go up, take a deep breath. Remember to keep breathing as you read and take breaks in between sections/paragraphs to calm down 5. Practice eye contact. Before I joined public speaking, I couldn't talk to anyone face to face. Any time you talk to someone (the mailman, a teacher, family, friends) maintain eye contact! Being comfortable around people will help you read in front of them. 6. Don't be afraid to mess up. If you mess up, let it go. Just work harder! Good luck! PS. that's so weird because when I present in French class, I have no problem and I'm never nervous... creepy
