How do you take care of sea monkeys?

What Do I Feed My Sea Monkeys With If I don't have the food?

  • I got a "The Amazing Life Sea Monkeys" tank as a gift for my desk. In cleaning stuff out, a janitor lost the food for the "sea-monkeys" I can't go buy more food, as my car is in the shop and rental is out of the option. I don't want to take a bus or anything unsafe so I'm wondering how can I feed them?!?! I DON'T want them to die!!!

  • Answer:

Keep them somewhere there is light, not direct sunlight that would overheat and evaporate their water, but enough light to encourage a little algae growing in the tank. If you have a fish aquarium, you could scrape out a bit of algae, not much is needed, and feed it to the brine shrimp - oops sea monkeys. If you have a packet of yeast, you can put a few grains of it in their water. Too much yeast and it will start growing and cloud the water so be very careful to be sparing. A frozen green pea or a small bit of frozen green bean is also good. Mash it or liquify it in a blender and then use only a tiny part of it. The rest can be refrigerated for a couple days but when it no longer smells completely fresh, start over with new.

Now, if you must use another food, though not reccommended, your best bet would be to go to a pet store and look for some algae powder similiar to that that is provided with the kits. You could also try a liquid algae (sounds kinda messy, so I don't know.) It is said that the liquid algae can promote live algae growth, but it sounds like this would cloud the water. The last few things I could suggest is Baker's Yeast (which actually is included in the Sea-Monkey egg packet so you don't have to feed them until the next week.), soybean powder, or wheat flower. I must say that I have only had success with the yeast. Also, these items probably won't help your sea-monkeys to grow as fast as the Growth Food would. I highly suggest you use these things as a backup if you are absolutely out of food. The Growth Food does last a very long time.

You can make an infusoria or green water culture, the stuff they call food for Artemesia is yeast. In either case feed extremely small amounts to avoid polluting the water.

Sorry the only thing that you can feed a sea monkey is sea monkey food but you only have to feed them once a week so they will probably be fine for a while. So your car should be fixed by then.

If you know someone with fish you could ask for some flakes and pulverize it into dust. If you're able to get to a pet shop you can use fry food. That's what I fed my brine shrimp and they did fine with it.
