Before taking the test, it might help to take a GED class. Open Door Mission used to offer FREE classes. You can call to see if the class is still offered. http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=5999707 They can also probably help you find a place to take the test that is closer to your home. WeCAN also offers free prep classes at different neighborhood libraries. The library in the Heights isn't included, but hopefully you can find one nearby. http://digitalhouston.ning.com/page/wecan-works-offers-free-ged The classes on this page are in progress now. But you can call the phone number that is listed and find about about classes for next fall. Houston Community College offers classes as well. http://www.hccs.edu/hccs/future-students/english-as-a-second-language-esl/adult-education-program-abe/ged/esl-eligibility-criteria There might be a fee for HCC classes. Harris County Dept of Education offers free classes as well, but they are all outside the loop. http://www.hcde-texas.org/default.aspx?name=AdultEducation You might compare the map to the bus routes to see if any of these will be helpful. Remember the classes fill up on a first-come-first served basis. Just don't want to put this off until the last minute if any of these are possibilities. TEST CENTERS: If I am counting correctly, there are 8 testing centers in Houston. http://bass.tea.state.tx.us/Tea.GEDi.Web/Forms/TestCenters.aspx#H These least expensive fees seem to be $41. The closest inexpensive location to you would be Houston Community College - NE campus at 1265 Pinemont. If you want to take the test really close to you at UH Downtown, the free is $95. I wish you the best with this!!! Don't give up. :)
