How do you get a job as a chef?

  • I am trying (notice I said trying, not succeeding) to break into the restaurant industry and it ain't going well. There was a time about September to February where I would apply to 500 restaurants a month (not kidding) never heard back. Everyone's looking for 5 years experience or more, so where do I start with 1 month's experience as a back up prep chef? I know things'll start moving once I get into the machine but how do I get in there?

    culinary school is probably the easiest way. you learn how to cook, gain experience, and network with people in the industry. I think you're best best, since you don't want to go to school, is find a job of being a prep chef instead of right to main chef, and stay with that for a long period of time. gain experience, while you're working you'll be able to network and meet people. you can't jump the gun and be a chef with only 1 months experience as a prep chef. careers take time.

uhmm you must start from ZERO, ... from nothing start asking a job for washing dishes, cleaning food, washing everything in the kitchen, do it well ask for more, watch i said WATCH what people do in the kitchen, learn everything there, after that ask your chef for a better positión.... i said a better POSITION no a better salary.... and say you can now grill something, ask him to give you a try. Show and prepare your self for that. and to go up ...up UP.... FROM the bottom of the kitchen.....ASK ANY OLD CHEF from the past everyone started from nothing from ZERO or even UNDER.
