How do i go about becoming a healthcare assistant!?

  • I am 17 and studying public services at college ive got 7 weeks left then im finished. I will be going to college again in september but was thinking about a different course which would be more suitable for becoming a healthcare assistant/ nurse. what course do i need to join? Im so confused i dont know how to go about becoming a healthcare assistant where do i start?

    Unfortunately, that's not a profession that you can go to college for. Any kind of assistant position like that requires you go to a vocational school (Heald, University of Phoenix, etc) or private college so that you can enter a program specifically for that area. It does require payments, though, and financial aid will not pay for every program - it depends on the school or private program you wish to enroll in. If you want to be a nurse's assistant, I'm telling you now that most likely, you will not work in a hospital unless there is a demand for them. Certified nurse's assistants (CNAs) majorly work in elderly care. You could try being a medical assistant, but again, the most you'll be doing is reception positions in a doctors office. So take your time and research first, take the time to really figure out which schools are worth it because a lot of vocational schools are only out for your money, so you may not get a good enough education for what you would be paying. You need to be 18 to be a carer. To work with vulnerable adults your employer will have to take out an enhanced disclosure check to make sure you are not a risk to the people you care for. This costs around 80 pound, In most company's if you leave before 12 months you have to pay this back. If you want to be a nurse you need 5 GCSE's C+ including Maths, English, Science. Some uni's are currently accepting Key skills level 2 in maths and English but this is set to change in the near future. As the Advance diploma is no longer available from Jan 2013 you can not gain access with an NVQ 3, the only way to be a nurse is to do the degree. To get on to this you will need a minimum of: 2 A-levels c+ or BTEC in Health and social care Merit, Merit, Merit or Access to nursing and midwifery passed with 45 at merit out of 60 credits (Usually 12 of the credits must be in a science subject and achieved at merit) Along with these you will also require also of experience. I have just been offered a place to study nursing in Jan, however I can tell you places are hard to get. Alot of people on my course have been rejected despite expecting good grades and having care experience. If you want to get in to nursing you will have to really stand out. Hope this helps

Hello! :) I am a student nurse and I have been offered to work with nhs professionals as a healthcare assistant! I would recommend this as you choose your own hours so it can work around uni and stuff! & if you enjoy a certain ward you can put them as preference! If you have not got any experience I would recommend you do voluntary work in your local hospice or nursing home to learn the basics such as washes, changes, baths, etc but if not just really research. You have to do a 40 multiple choice quiz before your interview and they're basic knowledge but you'll be surprised that even student nurses failed it! So research and use your common sense! :) & while I was on a stroke unit I had 2 health care assistance with me whom had never had any experience and we were more than happy to show them how to make beds etc! so make sure and tell the staff that your new and you just want to be shown! :D Best of luck you! I applied to work as a Home Carer. I had no experience at all. They gave me the job on the spot. You have to have a full driving license. But just apply to get in any care job. Put your name forward to do NVQ Health and Social Care. Once you have the qualifications, you won't find it as hard as before finding a job. I am now working in a psychiatric hospital, which I love. You have to start from somewhere and build it up :)
