Is Charter Arms underrated?
-
I've got an Undercover my brother bought for my sister back in the '80. It's been around the family a bit and has even won a gunfight against a very prominent ghetto king who messed with the wrong surname on one cold September evening when one of us had strayed into his territorial hunting grounds. His "nine", no matter how pretty, simply wasn't able to find its mark, where the Charter simply laid down one blistering hot +p hollow point with the desired effect of spinning his royalass down to ground. The police were impressed and were actually thankful that he had been extradited from their things to do. The Charter lightened their chores quite a bit in that region. But anyway...I'm very well versed in military hardware, having spent years behind the sights of just about everything the army has to offer, but I'm virtually ignorant about revolvers other than one well placed shot I've fired from one of them. I've just become reacquainted with this little gun as it passed back to me just last weekend. Since I last saw it I've acquired a s&w of the same caliber. On side by side comparison as far as the feel and lay of them both...I think I would pick up the Charter first if it came down to it even though it's barrel is two inches shorter then it's competitor. Maybe I'm just sentimental, but the gun just seems to lay more solidly on target with less effort than the smith. I've so noticed that there appears to be zero gap between the cylinder and the barrel of the Charter where I can see daylight between those on the smithy. Also, even though the smith is equipped with rubber "custom" grips...the little Charter seems much more at home in the hand with its stock factory wooden grips...there's simply no adjustment that. Weds to be made on acquiring a target...it just goes there quickly and with no messing about.

Answer:
The Charter Arms is and always has been a sub par handgun. Seeing no daylight between the cylinder and barrel, which is called cylinder gap, by the way, is NOT a good thing. As for your story, very entertaining, you should write fiction.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a well-made example of a used .44 Bulldog some 30 years ago in a Southern California milsurp shop (back before california politicians were COMPLETELY afraid of firearms) and I carried it on and off as a backup for many years. I never found the lockup and timing to be as tight as the S&Ws that I prefer, but it worked. I think they used a little softer metal in them, as it is now pretty sloppy compared to the Model 15 that I have had just as long. Since I prefer the big bore "shoot once and be done with it" train of thought, I bought a new .44 Bulldog acouple years ago. It is very accurate for what it is, although the lockup and fit is still a little loose. The rubber grips they come with now are much better than the old ones from decades ago. So, while I can bet my life on the Bulldog(s), I agree with Cane Toad . . . A Smith and Wesson they ain't. Since you like yours and apparently shoot it okay, use it!

They are a solid no frills get the job done with a minimum of fuss type of thunderstick. I have a 44 spec Pug in stainless that is the cats left whisker.

Read your question: you will fine you answered your own question. Yes they are good guns, never had a problem with mine either.

I had one of the newer Bulldog Pugs. Occasionally it would not hit the primer hard enough to set the round off. And by occasionally I mean every third cylinder full or so. Far too often for me to want to count on it. But if yours works, great. I've had guns with less than stellar reputations that have been very reliable and accurate.
